The men of experiment are like the ant; they only collect and use. But the bee...gathers its materials from the flowers of the garden and of the field, but transforms and digests it by a power of its own.

The Bee-ginning

Chris Dennehy never knew a thing about bees.  He knew he liked honey in his tea, but had never thought much beyond that.  On one trip down to Savannah, Georgia, Chris and his wife found the Savannah Bee Company. Chris tried all of the honeys they had to sample and found himself intrigued by the process of beekeeping and what makes each honey unique.

Once Chris re-located to Portland, Maine, a very bee friendly city, he knew what he wanted to do.  He took a beekeeping class at The Honey Exchange in Portland and bee-gan his journey.

“The keeping of bees is like the direction of sunbeams.”

— Henry David Thoreau

As he started his beekeeping journey, Chris also began to video his experience to share with friends and family (sometimes people like to learn about bees from a distance) on his Facebook page

With the demand for information and so many questions, Chris set up a Facebook pageInstagram account and a YouTube channel to share his experiences and teach people that bees, while they are stinging insects, are often misunderstood.  Learn with Chris as he progresses from amateur to expert.

The honey bee's numbers are in decline...

Why are the numbers of honey bees declining? No one can seem to point to one single cause.  Could it be pesticides? Maybe parasites? Or is it a fundamental change to their food supplies?

There are, however, things you can do in your own community to help honey bees flourish.
