The Hives - Year 4

WE MADE IT THROUGH A WINTER!!!

INSTALLED APRIL 26, 2020

That’s right! We over wintered 3 of our 4 hives successfully this year!! We are ecstatic! We have two full hive structures to fill, which we will do with a split and have done with a package of bees.

We have also expanded our hives. We have two new full hives for a total of 6 this year! The hives will no longer ALL be in the backyard (the beekeeper’s wife is ELATED!). We will be moving several hives to an orchard to the northwest of Portland, Maine early in the season! We will document the move and will be sure to craft some blogposts to talk about the experience and what this means for the bees, the honey they will produce, our harvest and general upkeep of the hives.

In addition, as you might have guessed, this year is a little different. With all that is going on with COVID-19, we will likely have to wait a very long time for an inspection. We will have to be more diligent than ever at keeping up with our 2020 hives.
