During a recent visit to Savannah (we LOVE Savannah!!), The Boxing Beekeeper went inside the Savannah Bee Company to get some insight into the life of bees in Georgia.
Savannah Bee Company was born out of Ted Dennard, the owner, founder and CEO’s passion for beekeeping. He is so passionate, in fact, he has been keeping bees since he was 12 years old.
Kristen, our guide and three year employee at the Savannah Bee Company, told us a story illustrating Ted’s passion for bees and beekeeping. The story goes that Ted, throughout his life, has been so passionate about bees and beekeeping, that when he moved to downtown Savannah in an apartment, at a point in time where beekeeping in Savannah was illegal, Ted kept a hive secretly… in his bathroom. Now that’s a passion for bees!! 🐝
We also talked with Kristen about the health of bees given they have recently been described as the most important species on the planet. We explored how folks who don’t keep bees can do to help the health of bees. First, Kristen said, “So really the easiest thing to do is plant wildflowers because that’s their food source.” One of the next most important things you can do save for raising hives, is to be mindful of the chemicals you use in your everyday life around your yard.
